McDonaldland was the fictional world created in McDonald’s advertising for Ronald McDonald and his friends.
The campaign presented McDonaldland as a colorful fantasy setting populated by characters including Ronald McDonald, Grimace, the Hamburglar, Birdie, and Mayor McCheese. It gave McDonald’s a connected story world rather than relying only on individual product advertisements.
McDonaldland became especially prominent in television commercials and children’s promotions from the 1970s onward. Its characters helped turn menu items and restaurant visits into parts of an imaginative brand universe. The setting also supported toys, playground themes, packaging, and in-store decorations.
McDonaldland is sometimes confused with the name of a restaurant or a children’s meal. It was instead the fictional setting used in advertising. Some of its characters and concepts changed over time, and McDonald’s eventually used the world less prominently as its marketing style evolved.
