Speedee was the name of McDonald’s custom typeface introduced for its brand identity in 2018.
The typeface takes its name from Speedee, the early McDonald’s mascot associated with the company’s original Speedee Service System. Reusing that name connected a modern design project with McDonald’s earliest operating and visual identity.
McDonald’s developed a broader global design system to make its communications feel more consistent across packaging, restaurants, digital products and advertising. A proprietary typeface gave the company more control over the appearance of headlines and other branded text than relying only on widely available commercial fonts.
This typography history is easy to confuse with the Golden Arches, which are a symbol rather than a typeface. It can also be confused with campaign phrases such as “I’m Lovin’ It.” Speedee refers specifically to the custom lettering system used in the company’s later visual identity work.
