Speedee was the McDonald's corporate mascot introduced before its later McDonaldland characters.
The chef-like figure appeared in early signs and promotional material during the restaurant's formative years. Speedee represented the central operating idea of the McDonald brothers' business: hamburgers and other menu items could be prepared quickly through a carefully organized system.
McDonald's early identity therefore combined a character, a service promise, and a distinctive restaurant design. Speedee's name reinforced the emphasis on speed, while the golden arches helped customers spot the building.
Later characters served different branding purposes. Ronald McDonald became the best-known personality, and McDonaldland characters such as Grimace and the Hamburglar supported children's advertising. Those characters should not be projected backward onto the earliest McDonald's identity, when Speedee was the key mascot.
