McDonald’s called its adult-targeted burger the Arch Deluxe when it launched in 1996.
The product was intended to move beyond McDonald’s traditional family and value positioning by presenting a more sophisticated burger. Its advertising emphasized adult tastes, including a potato-flavored bun, lettuce, tomato, onions, bacon, and a mustard-and-mayonnaise-style sauce.
McDonald’s invested heavily in promoting the Arch Deluxe, making it one of the company’s most ambitious product launches of the 1990s. The advertising positioned the burger as something for grown-up customers rather than children.
The Arch Deluxe did not achieve the lasting success of the Big Mac or Quarter Pounder. Its short commercial life is why it is often remembered as a famous fast-food marketing misfire. The name is also sometimes confused with later McDonald’s “deluxe” menu items, but Arch Deluxe was the specific 1996 product and campaign.
