The Fry Kids were McDonald's 1988 character group shaped like colorful french fries.
The characters were small, energetic figures whose bodies resembled clusters of fries. Their design turned one of McDonald's signature side dishes into a playful cast member and made the product visually recognizable in advertisements and promotional material.
The Fry Kids belonged to the broader McDonaldland branding system, but they were not the same as the McNugget Buddies. McNugget Buddies were anthropomorphic Chicken McNuggets, while the Fry Kids were specifically associated with french fries. This distinction matters because both groups used food-based character designs.
Their introduction extended McDonald's long-running practice of personifying menu items. Instead of relying only on Ronald McDonald or civic figures such as Mayor McCheese, the company could give individual products their own personalities. The Fry Kids therefore linked character branding directly to a familiar menu category.
