Mac Tonight was McDonald’s 1980s character with a crescent-moon head and sunglasses.
The character was designed to make McDonald’s evening business feel distinctive. Dressed in a tuxedo and often shown singing or playing piano, Mac Tonight used music and nightlife imagery rather than the child-oriented fantasy style of many McDonaldland characters.
His advertising campaign began in 1986 and became strongly associated with a version of “Mack the Knife.” The moon-shaped head made the character immediately recognizable in television commercials and print promotions.
Mac Tonight is sometimes mistaken for a version of Ronald McDonald because both were prominent advertising figures. They were separate characters serving different branding purposes: Ronald represented the family-focused McDonaldland world, while Mac Tonight promoted nighttime dining.
