Mac Tonight was McDonald's advertising character in the 1980s campaign set to a moonlit diner theme.
The campaign debuted in 1986 and featured a character with a crescent-moon head, dark sunglasses, and a tuxedo. Mac Tonight sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” using the phrase as a nighttime invitation to visit McDonald's.
The advertising was designed to promote evening business and give McDonald's a distinctive adult-oriented identity after dark. It differed from the family-centered McDonaldland character campaigns that had dominated earlier branding.
Mac Tonight is sometimes mistaken for a permanent corporate mascot or for a character named after the Big Mac. He was a specific advertising creation from the 1980s, and the campaign's central visual idea was the moon-faced performer rather than a hamburger character.
