McDonald’s 1980s advertising campaign built around the line “It’s Mac Tonight” was called Mac Tonight.
The campaign promoted McDonald’s evening business and featured a character with a crescent-moon head, sunglasses, and a tuxedo. The character sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” giving the advertisements a distinctive musical identity and making the campaign easy to recognize.
Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 and became particularly associated with nighttime restaurant visits. The campaign’s central idea was not a new sandwich but a new occasion: encouraging customers to think of McDonald’s as a place for dinner and evening outings.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with the Big Mac character, a separate advertising figure used to personify the sandwich. The campaign also should not be confused with “I’m lovin’ it,” which launched globally in 2003 and became a broader corporate platform.
