Speedee was the McDonald's character who promoted the chain before Ronald McDonald became dominant.
Speedee was introduced in 1948 as a chef-hat figure whose name highlighted the restaurant's fast-service system. He represented the McDonald brothers' efficient approach to food preparation, in which a limited menu and specialized workstations made service faster.
The character remained connected with McDonald's early signs and promotional material during the chain's formative years. His chef appearance also reinforced the idea that McDonald's was a food-service business, while his name emphasized speed as the central customer benefit.
Later branding shifted toward Ronald McDonald and the McDonaldland characters. Because Speedee was less visible in later decades, he is sometimes incorrectly described as a different spelling of a cartoon character from another franchise. In McDonald's history, however, Speedee is the original mascot.
