Speedee was the McDonald's corporate mascot shown on early company materials before Ronald McDonald.
The character appeared during the period when McDonald's identity was built around the Speedee Service System. He was depicted as a small chef-like figure, often with a hamburger-shaped head, and his name expressed the restaurant's central promise: quick, standardized service.
Speedee belonged to the McDonald brothers' original branding rather than Ray Kroc's later national advertising strategy. As McDonald's expanded, the company shifted toward the Golden Arches and a larger cast of family-oriented characters. Ronald McDonald eventually became the dominant mascot, but Speedee remained an important historical symbol of the chain's beginnings.
The name is often misspelled or confused with “Speedy.” In McDonald's branding history, the canonical name is Speedee, spelled with the final “e,” and it was connected directly to the restaurant's early service system.
