Answer
Trishala
Answer
Trishala
What was the name of Mahavira’s mother? Mahavira’s mother was Trishala, also known as Triśalā or Videhadatta.
Trishala was the wife of Siddhartha of Kundagrama and belonged to the Licchavi tradition. Jain accounts describe her as the mother of Vardhamana, the birth name of Mahavira, who became the 24th and final Tirthankara of the current Jain time cycle.
Her pregnancy is linked with auspicious dreams, an important episode in Jain devotional literature. Śvetāmbara texts traditionally say she saw fourteen dreams, while Digambara accounts commonly count sixteen. These dreams symbolized the greatness and spiritual destiny of the child.
One frequent source of confusion is Devananda. In the Śvetāmbara embryo-transfer narrative, Mahavira’s embryo was first formed in Devananda before being transferred to Trishala’s womb. Even in that account, Trishala is the mother who carried and gave birth to Mahavira, making her the standard answer.
