Answer
Kasturba Gandhi
Answer
Kasturba Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, whom he married in 1883, was Kasturba Gandhi.
Kasturba was born Kastur Kapadia in Porbandar in 1869, the same year and town associated with Gandhi’s birth. The couple married as teenagers in an arranged marriage, following the customs of their community. She later became widely known as Kasturba Gandhi or simply Ba, meaning “mother.”
Kasturba participated in India’s independence movement and was imprisoned several times for civil disobedience. She also worked in Gandhi’s ashrams, supporting education, sanitation, women’s participation, and campaigns against untouchability.
She died on 22 February 1944 while detained with Gandhi at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune. Her death is sometimes confused with Gandhi’s own death in 1948, but Kasturba died four years earlier, during wartime detention.
