Answer
Yasnaya Polyana
Answer
Yasnaya Polyana
Leo Tolstoy’s country estate where he was born and later buried nearby was Yasnaya Polyana.
Yasnaya Polyana, meaning “Clear Glade,” is located near Tula, south of Moscow. Tolstoy was born there in 1828 and spent much of his life connected with the estate. He wrote major works there, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina, while also educating local peasant children and developing his religious and ethical ideas.
Tolstoy’s grave lies in the estate’s Forest of the Old Order, near a ravine and the “green stick” associated with a story from his childhood. The grave is deliberately simple and has no conventional monument.
Yasnaya Polyana is sometimes confused with Khamovniki, Tolstoy’s Moscow home, or Astapovo, the railway station where he died. The estate is now a museum and cultural site.
