What was the name of Lamborghini's first SUV?

The story behind the answer

Lamborghini’s first SUV was the LM002. Introduced in 1986, it was an extraordinary four-wheel-drive off-roader from a company then best known for low, mid-engined supercars.

The LM002 grew out of Lamborghini’s military-vehicle experiments. The earlier Cheetah and LM001 prototypes were designed with military and industrial uses in mind, but their rear-mounted engines created handling problems. Engineers eventually moved a Lamborghini V12 to the front, producing the configuration that led to the LM002.

Often nicknamed the “Rambo Lambo,” the production vehicle combined a rugged tubular-steel chassis with an aluminum body and a luxurious cabin. Its 5.2-liter V12 came from the Countach family, while specially developed Pirelli Scorpion tires helped it travel across sand and rough terrain.

The LM002 is sometimes confused with the Urus because the Urus is Lamborghini’s modern SUV. However, the Urus arrived in 2017, more than three decades after the LM002. The older model is the company’s original production SUV and the direct spiritual ancestor of Lamborghini’s Super SUV line.
