What was the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s younger brother?

J.R.R. Tolkien’s younger brother was Hilary Tolkien. Hilary was born in 1894, two years after John Ronald Reuel, and the brothers spent part of their childhood together in England.

After their mother Mabel died in 1904, the boys were placed under the guardianship of Father Francis Morgan. Hilary later worked as a gardener and market gardener in Worcestershire rather than pursuing Tolkien’s academic career.

Hilary is sometimes confused with Tolkien’s son Christopher, who was born in 1924 and became the principal editor of many posthumous works. The brothers therefore belong to different generations of the Tolkien family.
