What was the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife and longtime literary partner?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife and longtime literary partner was Edith Tolkien.

Edith Mary Tolkien, born Edith Bratt, married Tolkien in 1916. Their relationship began when Tolkien was a teenager, although his guardian initially opposed the romance and required Tolkien to wait until he was older before pursuing it openly.

Edith inspired the fictional character Lúthien, an Elven woman whose love story with the mortal Beren is one of the central legends of Tolkien’s mythology. Tolkien regarded Lúthien as deeply connected with Edith, and their shared gravestone bears the names Beren and Lúthien.

The couple had four children: John, Michael, Christopher, and Priscilla. Christopher Tolkien later became an important editor and publisher of his father’s posthumous writings, including The Silmarillion.
