The invented writing system used for the Tengwar letters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fiction is called Tengwar.
Tengwar, meaning “letters” in Quenya, is a script devised within Tolkien’s languages and legendarium. It is associated especially with the Elves and is used to write several languages, including Quenya, Sindarin, and the Common Speech. The script’s forms can be adapted to different phonetic values depending on the language being written.
Tolkien designed Tengwar with systematic relationships among its characters. Its elegant appearance has made it one of the most recognisable visual elements connected with Middle-earth, appearing in inscriptions, maps, illustrations, and adaptations.
Tengwar is not the same as Cirth, another Tolkien writing system made from angular runic signs. Sarati is an earlier script Tolkien invented, while Angerthas refers to an expanded system of runes based on Cirth. These scripts are related through Tolkien’s worldbuilding but are distinct writing systems.
