Quenya was J.R.R. Tolkien’s invented language associated with many Elves of Valinor.
Tolkien based Quenya’s sound and structure partly on Finnish, while also developing it through his own historical and linguistic ideas. In his mythology, it was associated especially with the High Elves, including the Noldor and Vanyar, and with the ancient culture of Aman.
Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin became the everyday Elvish language of much of Middle-earth, while Quenya had a more formal, historical, or ceremonial role in many settings. Tolkien created extensive vocabulary and grammar for both languages, although neither was completed in the same way as a natural modern language.
