What was the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s guardian after his mother died?

The story behind the answer

Father Francis Morgan became J.R.R. Tolkien’s guardian after Tolkien’s mother died.

Tolkien’s mother, Mabel Tolkien, died in 1904, leaving John Ronald and his younger brother Hilary without a parent. Father Francis Morgan, a Roman Catholic priest associated with the Birmingham Oratory, became their legal guardian and supported their education and welfare.

Morgan had already been involved in the family’s Catholic life. His guardianship was especially significant because Mabel had converted to Roman Catholicism, and Tolkien later regarded her faith as a major influence on his own religious identity.

Tolkien’s relationship with Edith Bratt also developed during this period, although Morgan initially opposed the relationship while Tolkien was still young. Tolkien later married Edith in 1916. Biographies sometimes mention Morgan simply as “Father Francis,” but his full name was Francis Xavier Morgan.
