What was the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional Christmas character in his annual letters?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional Christmas character in his annual letters was Father Christmas.

From 1920 to 1942, Tolkien wrote illustrated letters to his children each Christmas, presenting them as messages from Father Christmas. The letters described adventures at the North Pole, mishaps, helpers, polar bears, goblins, and other characters.

The family preserved the letters, and they were later collected and published as The Father Christmas Letters. The work is separate from Middle-earth, although it displays Tolkien’s characteristic interest in invented languages, maps, histories, and elaborate fictional documents. Father Christmas is the central narrator, while the North Polar Bear serves as a frequent comic companion.
