Joan of Arc’s home village was Domrémy in the Duchy of Bar.
Joan was born and raised in Domrémy, a rural community on the eastern frontier of the French kingdom. The area was politically and militarily sensitive during the Hundred Years’ War, with nearby territories affected by Burgundian, English, and Armagnac loyalties.
The village was originally called Domrémy. It later became known as Domrémy-la-Pucelle, with “la Pucelle” meaning “the Maid,” a title associated with Joan. The modern commune is in the Meuse department of northeastern France.
Joan’s family farmed in the village, and she described herself as a daughter of the countryside rather than a member of the nobility. Her departure from Domrémy began the remarkable journey that eventually brought her to the royal court and French armies.
