What was the name of Jane Goodall's first husband?
Answer
Hugo van Lawick
Answer
Hugo van Lawick
Jane Goodall’s first husband was wildlife photographer Hugo van Lawick. They married on 28 March 1964 at Chelsea Old Church in London, after meeting through Louis Leakey’s work connecting Van Lawick’s filmmaking with Goodall’s chimpanzee research.
Van Lawick was a Dutch nobleman and a pioneering wildlife photographer and filmmaker. His photographs and films from Gombe helped introduce Goodall’s research—and the complex lives of wild chimpanzees—to a worldwide audience. During their marriage, Goodall was known as Baroness Jane van Lawick-Goodall.
The couple had one son, Hugo Eric Louis, born in 1967 and nicknamed “Grub.” Goodall and Van Lawick divorced in 1974 but remained friends. Goodall married Derek Bryceson the following year, making Bryceson her second husband rather than her first. Van Lawick continued working as a wildlife filmmaker and died in Tanzania in 2002.
