What was the name of Google’s smart-home company acquired in 2014?
Answer
Nest Labs
Answer
Nest Labs
Google acquired Nest Labs in 2014 as part of its expansion into smart-home technology.
Nest Labs was founded in 2010 by Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, former Apple engineers. Its best-known early products were connected thermostats and smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors designed with modern industrial styling and smartphone controls.
Google announced the acquisition in January 2014 for approximately $3.2 billion in cash. Nest initially operated as a separate business, later became part of Google’s hardware organization, and eventually contributed its brand to Google Nest products. This acquisition is separate from Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility in 2012.
