Georgia O'Keeffe’s husband was Alfred Stieglitz, the influential photographer who exhibited her early work.
Stieglitz was a leading advocate for modern art in the United States. Through his New York gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue, commonly called 291, he presented European avant-garde artists as well as emerging American artists. He first showed O'Keeffe’s abstract drawings in 1916.
Stieglitz also made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe over many years. Those portraits helped shape her public image, but O'Keeffe’s reputation ultimately rested on her own paintings and drawings across a long career.
The couple married in 1924 and remained together until Stieglitz died in 1946. Other photographers, including Paul Strand and Edward Steichen, were important figures in American modernism, but neither was O'Keeffe’s husband.
