Which New Mexico landmark inspired Georgia O'Keeffe’s many paintings of cliffs and mesas?

The story behind the answer

Ghost Ranch inspired Georgia O'Keeffe’s many paintings of New Mexico cliffs and mesas.

Ghost Ranch is a dramatic area near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and high desert light. O'Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and later made it one of her principal homes and working environments.

She repeatedly painted nearby formations, including the towering cliffs known as Cerro Pedernal in the wider region. Her compositions often isolate a ridge, wall, or mesa so that the landscape becomes a bold arrangement of shape and color rather than a conventional panoramic view.

Ghost Ranch was not the only New Mexico place she painted. Abiquiú, the Chama Valley, and other locations also appear in her work. The association remains especially strong because Ghost Ranch’s red and yellow cliffs became recurring visual landmarks in her paintings.
