What was the name of Gandalf’s sword in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories?

The story behind the answer

Gandalf’s sword in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories was Glamdring.

Glamdring was an ancient Elven sword made in Gondolin during the First Age. It was carried by Turgon, the city’s king, before Gondolin fell. Thousands of years later, Gandalf found it in a troll-hoard near the Trollshaws during the events of The Hobbit.

The sword was discovered alongside two other notable blades: Thorin Oakenshield took Orcrist, while Bilbo Baggins acquired Sting. In The Hobbit, the swords’ Elvish origin is revealed when they glow in the presence of orcs, a recurring property of blades made by the Elves of Gondolin.

Glamdring’s name is translated as “Foe-hammer.” Tolkien also gave Gandalf the title “Wielder of the Flame of Anor,” but that title refers to his identity and power, not to his sword.
