What was the name of Ford’s tractor marque launched in 1917?

The story behind the answer

Fordson was the tractor marque launched by Ford in 1917.

Fordson tractors were developed to bring Ford’s mass-production principles to agriculture. The first Fordson Model F was produced in the United States, and Ford also manufactured tractors in Britain and Ireland. The machines were smaller and generally more affordable than many earlier farm tractors, helping mechanized farming spread among ordinary agricultural users.

The name combines “Ford” with “son,” and it was used for Ford tractors rather than for the company’s passenger cars. Fordson production later became particularly important in Britain, where the marque was closely associated with the company’s agricultural machinery business.

Ford eventually left the tractor business in the twentieth century. The Fordson name should not be confused with Ferguson, an independent tractor brand associated with Harry Ferguson and a different three-point-hitch system.
