The record was John's first studio album without Bernie Taupin as his lyricist. Gary Osborne wrote lyrics for much of the album, while “Song for Guy” was an instrumental composition with a brief repeated vocal phrase at the end.

John wrote “Song for Guy” after learning about the death of Guy Burchett, a young messenger who worked for John's record company. The song's piano-led, largely instrumental form made it unusual within John's catalogue and helped it become a major UK hit.
