What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s wife who was an American writer?
Answer
Joy Davidman
Answer
Joy Davidman
C.S. Lewis’s wife was the American writer Joy Davidman.
Davidman and Lewis first became friends through correspondence and met in person after she moved to England. They entered into a civil marriage in 1956, and a Christian marriage ceremony followed in 1957.
Their relationship became especially important during Davidman’s illness. She died of cancer in 1960, and Lewis later wrote A Grief Observed, a painful reflection on bereavement and faith. The book was initially published under a pseudonym.
Davidman is sometimes confused with Lewis’s literary friends Dorothy L. Sayers or Janet Adam Smith, but neither was his wife. Her own career included poetry, fiction, and literary work before her relationship with Lewis.
