What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s mother, who died when he was nine?
Answer
Florence Augusta Lewis
Answer
Florence Augusta Lewis
C.S. Lewis’s mother was Florence Augusta Lewis.
Florence Augusta Lewis, born Florence Augusta Hamilton, was the mother of C.S. Lewis and his older brother Warren. She died of cancer in 1908, when Lewis was nine years old. Her death was a formative event in his childhood and affected the family deeply.
Lewis’s early education and interests developed before and after this loss. He later remembered his mother as intelligent and well educated, and her family background helped inspire the Hamilton element in his pen name, Clive Hamilton.
She is sometimes confused with Joy Davidman, whom Lewis married decades later. Florence Augusta Lewis was his mother; Davidman was his wife. Lewis’s father, Albert James Lewis, survived Florence and remained an important figure in the family’s early history.
