What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s first published book of poetry?

The story behind the answer

Spirits in Bondage was C.S. Lewis’s first published book of poetry. It appeared in 1919 while Lewis was still a young man and was published under the pseudonym Clive Hamilton.

The collection reflects the influence of Lewis’s early poetic interests, including mythology, classical literature, and the emotional atmosphere of the First World War. Lewis had served in the British Army during the war and was wounded in 1918. The poems therefore belong to an early period quite different from the Christian apologetics and children’s fiction for which he later became famous.

Lewis’s later poetry collection Dymer appeared in 1926 under the same pseudonym. The name Clive Hamilton can be confused with Lewis’s other early literary identities, but Spirits in Bondage is specifically associated with that name and with his first published volume.
