What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s final completed novel?

The story behind the answer

Till We Have Faces was C.S. Lewis’s final completed novel.

Published in 1956, the book retells the ancient Cupid and Psyche myth from the perspective of Orual, a princess and later queen. Its subtitle, A Myth Retold, signals Lewis’s method: he reshapes a classical story while examining love, possessiveness, identity, suffering, and the difficulty of seeing oneself truthfully.

The novel is often overshadowed by the Narnia books and Lewis’s Christian nonfiction, but Lewis considered it one of his strongest works of fiction. It was also his last completed novel. The Last Battle, published in 1956 as well, was the final Narnia book, not Lewis’s final novel overall. That distinction makes the two titles easy to confuse.
