What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s fictional land ruled by the Green Witch in The Silver Chair?

The story behind the answer

Underland is the fictional subterranean land ruled by the Green Witch in C.S. Lewis’s The Silver Chair.

In the novel, Jill Pole and Eustace Scrubb travel into Narnia on a mission to find the lost Prince Rilian. Their search leads them beneath the surface, where they encounter the witch and her underground kingdom. The setting gives the book its distinctive atmosphere of darkness, enchantment, and confinement.

Underland is not the same place as Archenland or Calormen, two other countries in the wider Narnian world. Those names are sometimes mixed up because all appear in the Chronicles of Narnia, but they serve different geographical and political roles.

The Silver Chair was published in 1953. It is the fourth Narnia book in publication order and the sixth in the series’ internal chronological order.
