What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s Cambridge college after he left Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis held his Cambridge post at Magdalene College.

In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the Cambridge chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature. The position was based at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he continued teaching and writing until his death in 1963.

The college name is easy to confuse with Magdalen College, Oxford, where Lewis had been a fellow since 1925. Cambridge uses the spelling “Magdalene,” ending in “-lene,” while the Oxford college is spelled “Magdalen,” without the final “e.” They are separate institutions with different histories.

Lewis did not abandon Oxford completely after moving to Cambridge. He retained strong personal and literary connections there, including his home at The Kilns and friendships with Oxford writers. His Cambridge appointment nevertheless marked the final major stage of his formal academic career.
