What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s American-born wife?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s American-born wife was Joy Davidman.

Davidman was an American writer who became a close intellectual companion of Lewis. They first married in a civil ceremony in 1956, primarily to address immigration and legal concerns, and later had a Christian marriage ceremony in 1957.

Their relationship became deeply important to Lewis, but Davidman developed cancer and died in 1960. Lewis later wrote A Grief Observed about the experience of losing her, initially publishing it under a pseudonym.

Davidman had two sons, Douglas and David, from her earlier marriage. Her life and writing are sometimes overshadowed by Lewis’s fame, although biographies and films have brought renewed attention to her influence and the couple’s relationship.
