What was the last Boeing 747 variant produced?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing 747-8 was the last 747 variant produced.

Boeing developed the 747-8 as the final major version of its iconic jumbo jet. It used a stretched fuselage, redesigned wings, improved engines, and updated systems. The passenger model was called the 747-8 Intercontinental, while the freighter was known as the 747-8F.

The 747-8F became especially important because cargo operators valued the aircraft’s large capacity and nose-loading capability. Lufthansa introduced the passenger 747-8 Intercontinental in 2012. The freighter version entered service earlier, with Cargolux in 2011.

Boeing ended 747 production in 2022, and the final aircraft was delivered in January 2023 to Atlas Air. The last delivery was a 747-8F, not a passenger Intercontinental. Earlier versions such as the 747-400 had much larger production runs, but they were not the final generation.
