What was the first single promoted from Saviors?

The story behind the answer

The first single promoted from Saviors was “The American Dream Is Killing Me.”

Green Day released the song digitally and to streaming services on October 24, 2023, several months before Saviors arrived on January 19, 2024. It was also premiered live at a secret Las Vegas show on October 19, making it the first public musical preview of the album’s campaign.

The song had originally been written during sessions for Father of All Motherfuckers (2020), but the band set it aside. Producer Rob Cavallo later encouraged Green Day to revisit it for Saviors, and Billie Joe Armstrong revised parts of the lyrics. Its subject is anxiety surrounding modern American life, including the failure of the promised “American dream.”

The later Saviors singles included “Look Ma, No Brains!”, “Dilemma,” “One Eyed Bastard” and “Bobby Sox.” A common mix-up is treating “One Eyed Bastard” or “Dilemma” as the lead single because both received prominent promotion later in the album cycle.
