What was the first published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet was the first published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.

The novel appeared in 1938 and introduces philologist Elwin Ransom, who is abducted and taken to Mars, known in the book by its name Malacandra. The story combines science fiction, planetary adventure, theology, and Lewis’s interest in language and medieval ideas.

The two later novels are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Together, the three books form what is commonly called the Space Trilogy, although Lewis did not always use that label himself.

Out of the Silent Planet is sometimes confused with The Chronicles of Narnia because both series contain allegorical and Christian themes. They are separate fictional universes, however, with different settings, characters, and narrative structures.
