Pokémon Go was Niantic’s augmented-reality mobile game for the Pokémon franchise.
Released in 2016 for iOS and Android, the game used GPS and mobile-device location data to place Pokémon and points of interest in the real world. Players could explore, capture, train, and battle Pokémon while moving through physical locations.
The game was developed and published by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Its launch created a major worldwide surge of interest and introduced Pokémon to many people who had not played the core role-playing games.
Pokémon Go is distinct from Pokémon Masters, Pokémon Sleep, and Pokémon Quest, which are separate mobile titles. It is also not a conventional augmented-reality headset game; its AR features use smartphone cameras and location technology.
