The red Gyarados is a specially colored, or shiny, Gyarados encountered as a boss opponent in the Johto-region story. Players must confront it as part of the plot, and they can capture it or defeat it to progress.

Its unusual red coloration made it one of the most memorable Pokémon encounters in the series. The event also gave many players an early introduction to the idea that Pokémon could appear in rare alternate color forms.

The location is sometimes confused with Sinnoh’s three lakes from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Lake Verity, Lake Valor, and Lake Acuity. Those lakes are important locations, but the iconic red Gyarados belongs to the Lake of Rage storyline in Gold and Silver.
