What was the first Mortal Kombat game released by NetherRealm Studios?

The story behind the answer

Mortal Kombat (2011) was the first Mortal Kombat game released by NetherRealm Studios.

The game is commonly called Mortal Kombat 9, although its official title is simply Mortal Kombat. It was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in 2011. NetherRealm was formed from the former Midway Games Chicago studio after Warner Bros. acquired key Mortal Kombat assets.

The game retells the events of the first three Mortal Kombat games through a revised timeline. Raiden sends a message to his past self before the original tournament, creating a story that revisits familiar events while changing their outcomes.

Mortal Kombat (2011) also returned to a two-dimensional fighting-plane presentation after the crossover Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Its success established NetherRealm Studios as the continuing developer of the main series and led to Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11.
