What was the first Harry Potter novel, written by J.K. Rowling, called in the United States?

The story behind the answer

The first Harry Potter novel was called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States.

J.K. Rowling’s debut Harry Potter book was published in Britain in 1997 under the title Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Scholastic changed “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” for the American edition, which appeared in 1998. The story, characters, and plot remained the same.

This title difference is one of the best-known variations between editions of the Harry Potter series. In most countries, the British title is used, while the American title appears in US editions, films, and related merchandise. The change was made because the publisher believed “Sorcerer’s Stone” would be clearer and more appealing to American children.

The novel introduces Harry’s arrival at Hogwarts, his friendship with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and his first confrontation with Voldemort’s legacy.
