What was the first Assassin's Creed game released for virtual reality?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Nexus VR was the first Assassin's Creed game released for virtual reality.

Developed by Red Storm Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR launched in 2023 for the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3. It adapts the series' stealth, climbing, assassination, and exploration mechanics for a first-person virtual-reality format.

The game features three playable protagonists from earlier entries: Ezio Auditore, Connor, and Kassandra. Their sections connect through a framing story in which the player enters memories, allowing the game to revisit different historical periods while using motion-controlled interactions.

Assassin's Creed Identity was a mobile action role-playing game, not a virtual-reality title. Assassin's Creed Chronicles is a series of 2.5D games, and Liberation was first released as a PlayStation Vita title. Nexus VR is therefore distinct in both platform and presentation.
