The 2002 FIFA World Cup final ended 2–0, with Brazil defeating Germany in Yokohama, Japan.
The final was played on 30 June 2002 at the International Stadium Yokohama. Brazil’s Ronaldo scored both goals, opening the scoring in the 67th minute and adding a second in the 79th minute. Germany’s goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who had won the tournament’s Golden Ball, made an error before the first goal when he failed to hold Rivaldo’s long-range shot.
Brazil’s victory gave the country its fifth World Cup title, extending its record as the tournament’s most successful nation. The match was also the first World Cup final contested by Brazil and Germany. Germany had reached the final after beating South Korea, while Brazil defeated Turkey in the semifinals.
The score is sometimes misremembered as 2–1 because many major finals feature a late consolation goal. Germany did not score in this final, and Brazil’s clean sheet remained intact.
