Albert Einstein died on April 18, 1955. He was 76 years old and died at Princeton Hospital in Princeton, New Jersey, after internal bleeding caused by the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Einstein had experienced symptoms the previous day and was taken to hospital. He had undergone surgery for an aortic aneurysm in 1948, but declined another operation in 1955, saying that he preferred to die when his time came rather than prolong life artificially.

He remained intellectually active almost until the end. At the hospital, he brought a draft of remarks he had been preparing for a television appearance marking the seventh anniversary of the founding of Israel, but he died before completing them.
