The Nintendo Switch was developed under the codename NX.
Nintendo used NX while the system was being designed and discussed publicly before its final name was revealed. The company formally unveiled the console as Nintendo Switch in October 2016, replacing the mysterious project label with a name that highlighted its ability to switch between television and portable play.
NX appeared in industry reports and Nintendo-related speculation for several years. It followed the Wii U and was widely understood to represent Nintendo’s next dedicated gaming platform, although many technical details remained unknown until the official reveal.
Players sometimes confuse NX with names from earlier Nintendo hardware projects. Project Café was the development name associated with Wii U, while Revolution was an early codename for Wii. NX belongs specifically to the system that became Nintendo Switch.
