The fictional device used to access genetic memories in Assassin's Creed is called the Animus.
In the series, the Animus allows a user to relive ancestral memories encoded in DNA. The modern-day character Desmond Miles uses it to experience the lives of ancestors such as Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore, providing the bridge between contemporary scenes and historical gameplay.
The Animus is not the same as Eagle Vision, which is a perception ability used by characters, or the Bleeding Effect, which describes memories and skills affecting a user after repeated exposure. The Apple of Eden is a Piece of Eden, a separate ancient artifact with powerful effects.
Abstergo Industries develops and operates Animus technology in the modern storyline. Later games show different Animus designs and users, but the core concept remains consistent: a machine reconstructs ancestral experiences from genetic data.
