What was the codename for the German offensive at Kursk in July 1943?

The story behind the answer

The codename for the German offensive at Kursk in July 1943 was Operation Citadel. In German military usage, the operation was called Unternehmen Zitadelle, meaning “Citadel.” It began on 5 July 1943, when German forces attacked the northern and southern edges of the Kursk salient in an attempt to encircle Soviet armies.

The plan required a double envelopment. Walter Model’s Ninth Army advanced from the north, while the Fourth Panzer Army and Army Detachment Kempf attacked from the south. Germany hoped to destroy a large Soviet force and regain the initiative on the Eastern Front.

The offensive stalled against deep Soviet defenses, minefields, artillery, and extensive armored reserves. The Battle of Prokhorovka became one of the campaign’s best-known clashes, although its scale and precise losses remain debated. After the German advance failed, the Soviets launched counteroffensives including Operation Kutuzov and Operation Polkovodets Rumyantsev.

Operation Blau was the 1942 German offensive toward the Caucasus and Stalingrad; Operation Typhoon targeted Moscow in 1941; and Barbarossa was the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union.
