What was the Boeing 737 MAX’s first production variant?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was the first production variant of the 737 MAX family.

The MAX 8 was developed from the 737 Next Generation 737-800 and became the first MAX model to complete certification and enter airline service. Malindo Air operated the first commercial MAX flight on May 22, 2017.

The family also includes the shorter MAX 7, the longer MAX 9, and the still-longer MAX 10. Although Boeing announced several versions during the program, the MAX 8 was the variant delivered first in significant numbers.

The MAX designation refers to a new generation with CFM International LEAP-1B engines, aerodynamic refinements, and other system changes. The MAX 8 should not be confused with the original 737-800, which belongs to the earlier Next Generation family and has different engines and certification history.
