What was the approximate size in pixels of each character in Shigetaka Kurita’s original 1999 emoji set?

The story behind the answer

Each character in Shigetaka Kurita’s original 1999 emoji set was approximately 12 by 12 pixels.

The tiny grid was a practical response to the limitations of early mobile phones and their displays. Kurita’s pictograms had to remain recognizable despite using very little visual detail, so their designs relied on bold shapes and familiar symbols.

This constraint helps explain why many early emoji look more like icons than illustrations. They were not intended to match the highly detailed, animated, or three-dimensional artwork found on some modern platforms.

The 12-by-12-pixel format also made the original set very different from today’s Unicode emoji. Unicode standardizes character encoding and presentation, while companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft create their own artwork. As a result, the same encoded emoji can look different across devices.
